Madame le Chancelier,

C'est pour moi un très grand honneur de prononcer devant vous l'éloge d'un homme qui s'est dévoué corps et âme à l'avancement des connaissances, à la fois comme chercheur, mais aussi comme défenseur de l'éducation et de la recherche universitaires. Monsieur Robert Lacroix, professeur émérite et ex-recteur de l'Université de Montréal, a consacré 35 ans de sa vie à cet établissement, son alma mater, sur laquelle il a exercé une influence déterminante et transformatrice.

Robert Lacroix started his academic journey in 1960. That year, he entered the Université de Montréal to study economics, a subject he loved and excelled in. After getting his PhD in Louvain, Belgium, he returned to Montreal in 1970 and was hired as a professor of economics at his alma mater's department of economics. Only seven years later, he became chair of the department—and his leadership was noteworthy especially in the many measures he introduced to boost the department's research output. The course he set was definitely the right one: as the years passed, the Université de Montréal's department of economics joined the ranks of the very best in North America. 

La contribution exceptionnelle de Robert Lacroix à l'Université de Montréal prend bien des formes. Il faut dire qu'il y a occupé des fonctions variées, dont doyen de la Faculté des arts et des sciences. Il s'est aussi illustré au sein du Centre interuniversitaire de recherche en analyse des organisations de l'Université (le CIRANO), un organisme de réputation internationale qu'il a cofondé et auquel il collabore toujours.

Cependant, c'est sans doute en tant que recteur que Robert Lacroix a le plus influé sur la destinée de l'Université de Montréal. En 1998, l'établissement connaît d'importantes difficultés financières. Pourtant, à la veille de son entrée en fonction comme recteur, Robert Lacroix contient à peine son enthousiasme : il a hâte de se mettre au travail. Il sait qu'une simple offensive publicitaire ne suffira pas; il veut entreprendre un « réajustement sérieux » de la façon dont l'Université accueille et encadre ses étudiants.

In the year 2000, with one of his first major projects as rector in full swing—that is, transforming the university's approach to greeting and guiding students—Robert Lacroix launched the largest fundraising campaign in the history of Quebec's Francophone universities. In the process, he recruited donors at every level, including governments, corporations and other private-sector partners. For him, businesses had every reason to invest massively in university research, and that's the message he used to drive the campaign. It was a new approach—and the campaign was a thundering success.

Under Robert Lacroix's stewardship, the Université de Montréal campus blossomed: four new buildings were constructed for research in leading-edge sectors like biotechnology and aerospace science. Students gained access to paid summer internships, to new scholarships and to better guidance and mentorship. New programs opened. Under Robert Lacroix 's steady hand, the Université de Montréal carved out a place for itself among Canada's top universities, in both teaching and research.

Pour Robert Lacroix, le savoir n'est rien de moins que « l'or des économies modernes ». C'est sans doute l'idée qui a guidé sa défense de la mission universitaire et son combat contre le sous-financement des universités. De cette conviction part également sa croyance, tout aussi ferme, que la croissance des universités est essentielle au développement de la société. Selon lui, les universités ont un important rôle à jouer dans la nouvelle économie du savoir : elles préparent les futurs acteurs de la société à jouer leur rôle et stimulent l'innovation par la recherche.

Throughout his career, Robert Lacroix has always gone beyond simply pointing out problems; he has probed for solutions, actively and intently...usually in novel ways and down new avenues. That desire to do more, to do better, to go farther has brought many honours and distinctions, including the Armand-Frappier Award, the Order of Canada, the Ordre national du Québec and several honorary doctorates. Finally, no surprise once again, right across Canada and in countries far beyond, Robert's insights and expertise in university matters are in constant demand. And so they should be.
